The Broomfield Council on the Arts and Humanities presents ASTER Women’s Chamber Choir: Songs of War and Peace

The theme of ASTER Women’s Chamber Choir’s Spring concert is a timeless one, which has inspired great poetry and music. Two local composers, Sara Flores and Alex Craig will have pieces premiered.

The Flores piece, Untapped Peace, features original words and music and answers a child’s questions about war. The Craig cycle, War Songs Revisited, is a set of pieces setting poems by 12th century Chinese poet, Kao Ch’i, American poets Edna St. Vincent Millay and Amy Lowell, and English poets, Rudyard Kipling and Alfred, Lord Tennyson.

Contemporary choral composers Ruth Morris Gray and Kim AndrĂ© Armesen have set How Like a Winter, from Shakespeare’s Sonnet 97 and by Even When He is Silent a text found written on a wall of a concentration camp after World War II. These poignant pieces will surely touch the heart of those in the audience.

ASTER is delighted to welcome Anna Wheeler Gentry as Assistant Conductor. In addition, musical guests Anna Lynn-Palevsky and Declan Siefkas will perform an instrumental interlude composed by Artistic Director Christina Lynn-Craig’s father. This Idyl for Violin and Piano provides a transition from the War and Peace sections of the program. Another special offering is the Iraqi Peace Song which will be sung in a mixture of Arabic and English accompanied by Broomfield resident Kusala Anupindi on cello and ASTER alum Allison Zema on drum. Solos and readings will add variety to the program.

The concert will conclude with a performance of Franz Schubert’s sublime setting of The Twenty-third Psalm, and Gwyneth Walker’s exuberant setting of E. E. Cummings poem I Thank You God for Most This Amazing Day.
